The mystery of my previous birth

After whacking my brain left, right and center, the other day I decided that I would become Dadasaheb Phalke in my previous birth. Why not? I may not have introduced cinema into India, but like Phalke sir, I too had carried a projector to show my films in Indian villages. At some point in his life he was struggling to make films, as I am now. So… our lives would match same to same… Being Dadasaheb Phalke in my previous life would not only be believable but also logical.

So I thought… till ‘The Family’ gave me a cynical smile with a ‘You and Dadasaheb Phalke?’ kind of look. I pondered – true there were differences. He showed his films riding on a bullock cart and I, in a rickety ambassador car. And the most notable was that I had gone digital whereas he had struck with celluloid in his entire life.

Well, if not Dadasaheb Phalke, who else? I cracked my brain left, right and center again… Hmmmm…. How about Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi?

Yes, he would be great as my previous life. He was a lawyer and I had completed one year of my law studies. He was from ‘small town’ Porbundar where as I was from ‘small town’ Udupi, both coastal areas in the western side of India. He had worked hard to fight for our freedom and well, as a rebellious teenager I too remember working hard for my ‘Freedom’ – freedom from parental clutches.

Most importantly, the man was thrown out of a train in South Africa. As a young man, I too was thrown out of a running train at Dadar station after being slapped hard by a group of military personnel. I had mistakenly sneaked into the military compartment. After the incident I too had confronted the word ‘Dignity’. So… our lives would match same to same… Being Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in my previous life would not only be believable but also logical.

So I thought… till ‘The Family’ laughed loudly - ‘You and Gandhiji…? That’s a joke…ha… ha… ha… ha…’ ‘The Family’ almost forgot to stop.

I got wild. It was only last night that ‘The Family’ had suggested that I should seriously consider myself applying as a participant in the new but popular TV show called ‘Raaz Pichle Janam Ka’ (The Mystery of One’s Previous Life) and the ‘Past Life Regressive Therapy’ that it conducts. “I want to see what story would you cook up in your previous birth, where do I figure in such a cooked up story and most importantly, I want to see if you had the habit of lying in your past life also”, was the logic for the insistence. And just as I was making some serious mental preparations…

I throw up a challenge, ‘Ok smarty… why don’t you tell me what I was in my previous birth?’

‘The Family’ continues to laugh and instantly says, ‘A crow’.

Well…I did think of taking flight immediately.

Being called a crow is not a mean joke!
Just watch Hitchcock’s Birds to see the power of these birds or look at the beautiful paintings of this bird by R.K.Laxman!

    Don’t loose heart, keep cawing…..

  7. @ Ramchandra Babu - Yes sir… Hitchcock’s take on the revenge of the birds… great film.

  8. A great comparision with some great persons of their era. A great combination of logical thoughts and simple living high thinking life.

  9. Cryptomnesia - The retention of unconscious memory of information learned through normal channels. Cryptomnesia is often considered a possibility in psychical research of incidences involving reincarnation or a medium’s communication with the dead. It is the test as to whether the resulting information was actually obtained paranormally, or could have been obtained by some other means. If the latter seems possible then cryptomnesia is strongly suspected.

  10. nice thought!

  14. @Batul - I have now started taking a liking the idea of being a bird in my other life. *S*

  15. Now that it’s settled you were a crow, when do we see you on Raaz Pichle Janam Ka? It would be interesting to have a bird’s eyeview of the same! :)

  16. I am afraid that if the crew of the series read this piece, they would not let me in thier set.
