Surabhi (Nargis) is a female mendicant whose devotional song attracts Vijay (Dilip Kumar). Vijay is an aethist and despite surabhi's repeated protestations, he keeps following her. Finally Surabhi tells Vijay her story. She tells him how she escaped from her debt-ridden father and alcoholic brother who wanted her to marry an old man. She leaves telling Vijay not to follow her beyond a particular tree. Later another mendicant reaches the tree and gives Vijay a book saying Surabhi had given her the book before she died telling her to give it to a man who would be waiting by that tree.
