The film is set against World War II and is the story of 3 brothers in Rangoon and their widowed sister in Madras. The youngest brother Gunasekaran (Sivaji Ganesan) leaves for Rangoon for his sister’s (Sriranjini) marriage but gets delayed and robbed off his belongings in Madras. By this time the sister is married and widowed. He traces her out but does not reveal his true identity to her as he is unable to do anything for her. Meanwhile the other two brothers too leave for India but get separated. Gunasekaran, who has fallen for Vimala (Pandari Bai), sets himself as his sister's protector and when a priest tries to molest her, he wounds the priest. The sister tries to kill her self along with her infant child. She survives and is tried for the murder of the infant with her eldest brother, Chandrasekharan (SV Sahasranamam) being the judge. Finally things are sorted out in court and the family is re-united.
