Noshu (Dilip Kumar) is a writer. But his writing work is insufficient for him to earn a decent living and he is forced to depend on his school-master brother, something he is clearly not happy with. He decides the only way out is out to make money any which way one can. He joins the black market and makes money by taking advantage of famine conditions and shortage of medicines. He leaves his brother and abandons the woman who loves him, Mala (Meena Kumari). But even as he makes more and more money, the suffering of those on the footpath, with whom he had shared his early life, continue to haunt him. Torn between black money on one hand and honest human integrity on the other, he is forced to make a choice - to find a new path for himself...
