It is impossible to believe that this is a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film starring no less Meena Kumari and Guru Dutt with music by Shankar-Jaikishen. In fact, Sanjh aur Savera is possibly one of Hrishida's weakest films, an unbearable suffering woman melodrama.
Sufficient to say practically nothing in the film works. The screenplay, full of cliches,is pedestrian and implausaible and lacks any depth whatsoever with an abundance of the most covenient of coincidences and easiest possible solutions available to solve any complications the ridiculous story throws up. The lead actors look disinterested, merely going through the motions as if having given up trying to make any sense of the story, Mehmood and Shubha Khote, the comic items, overact outrageously and even Shanker-Jaikishen's music is adequate without being great. The best tuned numbers are the semi-classical Na Aaye Balma Saawan Beeta Jaaye on Mehmood and Shubha Khote and the title song Yahi Hai Woh Sanjh aur Savera.
Technically too, the film is tacky with ordinary camerawork, awful art direction and some woeful rear projection sequences as Guru Dutt drives his car. Surprisingly, even the flow of the film is choppy and jerky to say the least, lacking the usual editorial flair one always finds in Hrishida's films thanks to his considerable editing skills.Â
Avoidable.
