Albert Pinto (Naseeruddin Shah) is a mechanic who gets a kick of driving his customers' fancy cars and dreams of owning them. His sister (Smita Patil) works as a salesgirl and is constantly harrassed by male customers. His bother is a rebel who is in jail while his mother spends all her time in church. Albert is engaged to Stella (Shabana Azmi), a friendly and easy going girl who works as a secretary. She is being pursued by her boss but rather than sympathize with her, Albert accuses her of leading the man on. Albert's father (Arvind Deshpande) joins a textile workers' strike and it is only when he is attacked by the goons of his employer, that Albert realizes his duty to his family and his palce in society.
