Kudrat

Hindi, Drama, 1981, Color

Chandramukhi (Hema Malini) comes to Simla with her parents. There she is engaged to Dr. Naresh (Vinod Khanna), a psychiatrist. She begins to recall strange events and has nightmares of her past birth when she was Paro, a gaon-ki-gori in love with Madho (Rajesh Khanna). But their story ended tragically when she was raped and killed by ‘Chhote Sarkar’ Choudhury Janak Singh (Raaj Kumar). As Naresh starts treating Chandramukhi, she meets Mohan (Rajesh Khanna again) a lawyer engaged to Karuna (Priya Rajvansh) who is his mentor, Janak Singh’s daughter…

Haqeeqat (1964) onwards, practically every film that Chetan Anand made including Kudrat (1981) always posed one large question - Why Priya Rajvansh? But then it is well known that love is blind! However, keeping the terribly stilted as always Rajvansh aside, this tale of reincarnation and revenge, though creakingly dated, is still fairly watchable.

The strength clearly is the screenplay unveiling the otherwise standard story cleverly, a little at a time thereby keeping you engrossed in the proceedings even though you know the final outcome. Of course Mohan is Madho reborn… yes, he falls for Chandramukhi…and yes, he prosecutes his mentor Janak Singh who is defended by Karuna in a hammy courtroom finale…You get the picture.

Of the actors, Vinod Khanna and a comparatively reined-in Raaj Kumar come off best as Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini both look far too old to play the young lovers convincingly. And the less said about Priya Rajvansh, the better! The huge supporting cast is adequate enough.

Technically, very so-so. Musically Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna in both versions (Kishore Kumar and Parveen Sultana) and Tune O Rangeela Kaisa Jaadu Kiya are definite assets even if rather dully picturized.

All in all, average watchable fare at best.
