Bombay

The film is set against the background of the 1993 riots in Bombay following the destruction of the Babri Masjid by Hindu fundamentalists in December 1992. Shekhar (Aravind Swamy), a Hindu boy sees a Muslim woman, Shaila Bano (Manisha Koirala), dancing at a wedding and falls in love with her. However, both fathers oppose this marriage. The couple them elope and move to Bombay, now Mumbai, where Shekhar works as a journalist. Bano gives birth to twin boys. Following the destruction of the Babri Masjid, Muslim militants kill two workers. The Shakti Samaj leader (Tinnu Anand) instigates his saffron-clad workers to take revenge on the Muslims and there is full scale carnage in the city. Shekhar and Bano lose their children in the riots. The children are looked after a transvestite.  After a fervent pacifist plea by Shekhar, the family is united again and the secular minded elders of both Hindu and Muslim communities pacify the rioters.
