Drona

Hindi, Action, 2008, Color

From when time itself started, the universe has kept one secret carefully camouflaged within its folds. A secret, which if unraveled, could unlock the destruction of mankind and the entire cosmos. Today, only one man can protect the universe's precious secret and thus save the human race from absolute annihilation. He is Drona (Abhishek Bachchan). Rooted in the vibrant tapestry of Indian mythology, Drona is the journey of one man's spectacular voyage through the labyrinths of mystic myths and legendary legacies. It is a journey that will force him to face his fears and make him the hero he was born to become...

Touted as a Magical Adventure, Drona is nothing of the sort. What it is, instead, is a total waste of time and money. The film is likely to appeal neither to adults nor to children and ends up in no man’s land, let down by a dull, unimaginative screenplay that fails to involve the viewer at all. Add to this, a total lack of thrills and no entertainment value whatsoever and you have a sorry excuse of a film that is beyond redemption.

The film tries too much for its own good. It mixes elements of Harry Potter, Hollywood fantasy and adventure spectacles, graphic novels, Amar Chitra Katha comics and Hindi cinema clichés to ultimately become a total khichdi. Drona tries hard to be a big-budget visual spectacle and admittedly money has been pumped into its action sequences and special effects while the film has been shot in locales like Prague, Bikaner and Namibia but since the storyline is trite, it all comes to nothing.  Also, the film's cause is not helped by some extremely tacky SFX and an insipid, uninspiring Production design.

Even the star cast fails to salvage the film. Abhishek Bachchan sincerely gives it his all and tries gamely to make the film work but he is totally defeated by the inane screenplay. The fault is his. This is what happens when you blindly agree to do a film on the basis of contacts and friendship rather than on the strength of the screenplay and cinematic ability of the filmmaker. One thought he might have learnt his lesson from Bas Itna sa Khwaab Hai (2001)... Priyanka Chopra acquits herself quite well as an action heroine who can kick ass. If only some thought had gone into her styling, characterization and performance, one might have got something to comment on. For Kay Kay Menon, otherwise an extremely fine actor, Drona, is undoubtedly the nadir of his career so far. Hitchcock always maintained that stronger the villain, the better the film for then the hero has to then be that much more effective to quell the villain. 'Gustaaqi Maaf' Mr Menon, but Gabbar Singh or Mogambo, Riz Raizada ain’t. He’s nothing more than a buffoon who must have made you cringe a million times over while playing him. Jaya Bachchan’s special appearance as Maharani Jayati Devi adds nothing to the film either.

Technically barring a couple of well executed action sequences, there is nothing much to write home about. The climactic fight between Drona and Riz Raizada is particularly unimaginative and never rises to any great heights whatsoever. The music is most disappointing, the background score desperately overblown to hide the ineffectuality of the film while the placement of songs in the narrative clearly shows a total lack of cinematic sense. Jeena To Aise Jeena, in particular, has no place in the film. It just springs up from nowhere and neither is it helped by some extremely ordinary choreography and an unexciting picturization. The less said about the mother – son song meant to create a poignant moment between the two, the better. When will our films ever get out of 'Mere Paas Ma Hai' syndrome??? But the most disappointing section of the film is undoubtedly the bit shot in Prague showing Abhishek with his adopted family. You see nothing of what makes it arguably the most stunningly beautiful city in the world.

All in all, totally avoidable.

Abhinav says:
How do you turn someone into a super hero?

Difficult to say. Guess the easier thing to do is to create a super hero and let someone play it.
Drona clearly comes across as an image makeover vehicle for Sh. Bachchan.
So after spending crores has Goldie Behl managed to turn Sh. Bachchan into a super hero?
Well it doesn’t seem so.

During the first half of the film you keep wondering why these guys who are driving Ferraries and SUVs, fighting with swords and knives?
And during the second half you get even more confused when they start riding horses. Where did the cars go? Which time period are we in?
Are the gun control laws working so well? Ah and yes, we understand that Miss Chopra and Sh. Bachchan have different fashion designers,
but him in jackets and jeans and her in some period costume? Oh and wait, she dons shorts and tank tops suddenly for a song!
I mean ….come on Goldie….give us a break!

Goldie, like me, did grow up on Phantom comics, so you see this super hero thing is actually hereditary! It goes on in the family.
News channels were criticising Ms. Jaya Bachchan for leaving the venue without watching the premier of the movie. One can understand why.
Poor Ms. Bachchan, at her age she shouldn’t be subjected to torture!

It seems Goldie was not clear whether he was making a period film or a superhero film. In fact he was completely confused.
He just tried to include too many things into the same project. However, one can understand, after all he doesn’t have any other movie on hand!

Another drawback is that the movie is slow and the flavour is not one that could appeal to kids (which super heros usually do).
Almost the entire movie goes into establishing Drona as a super hero. Half the time he is either finding his old horse or his old sword etc.
So by the time you get the background and know that he is a super hero, there is hardly any time left for Mr. Super Hero to do anything (any of the super hero antics).

Whole lot of money has gone into the making of this movie and it is visible. The sets are good, the visual effects and SFX are very good. The only thing you may ask is,
does any of this make any sense, or does it contribute towards making it a great movie. At the end of it, the WOW effect is missing.

Kay Kay Menon does a good job again. The music is a let down, with the title track being played again and again.
Drona may win a couple of awards for visual effects, SFX, action, sets, cinematography etc.
And if after reading all this you still don’t get to know the films story, it’s because there isn’t any.
The only thing desirable about Drona, is Priyanka Chopra.

Actually Goldie could have hired Rakesh Roshan as a consultant, as his sense of mass appeal is certainly much better.

Keeping in mind the fact that the movie is very expensive, it looks difficult for it to make profit for distributors, though Eros has already made table profits.

One intelligent thing that Goldie has done is that he has left scope for a sequel. Given that Sh. Bachchan took some 11-12 films to establish himself as a hero,
Goldie would need to direct some more of these super hero flicks!
