Love Story 2050

Hindi, Drama, Stunt Film, Thriller, 2008, 200 min

Love Story 2050 is a complete mish-mash of a launch vehicle for Harman Baweja. The story is beyond logic and goes from the present to the future and involves the reincarnation of Priyanka Chopra along with a serious does of cliched serendipity. The movie would've made far more sense if the first half was set in the future, where Priyanka could've died, and Harman has to come back to the past (with his android buddies no doubt) to change an event to affect things in the future, which keeps her alive. But really to expect any kind of logic in messy screenplay would be asking for too much. The effects are ... animated. Unlike the effects we're used to from Hollywood films, the cityscapes, green-screen backgrounds, et al don't look real, but rather look as if they're from a Pixar animated film - which makes the whole film look a bit surreal, a la Bollywood version on Aeon Flux. The animatronics on the other hand, are passable. Harman Baweja makes a shaky debut. He moves his hands too much when excited and is too much of a low-intensity cry-baby when serious. But he looks good, and no doubt will learn much under more able directors he has signed up with. But because he is so ineffectual in this film, he makes Priyanka Chopra look like a veteran actress. With her sexy costumes and red-hair - Chopra delivers a complete - and fun - performance. Boman Irani does what he's been told well and Archana Puran Singh provides some authentic laughs. No matter what you try in any film - whether it's nouveau sfx, good acting, innovative ideas, never-scene-before concepts - at the end of it a badly written script will always, always let you down. Is it really that hard to not spend 30 crores - before spending a little time writing an honest screenplay? * * * Update: Harry Baweja has gone on record to say that 2050 hasn't worked at the box-office because it is a film ahead of it's time. Couldn't agree more. Even the chaps in 2050 will undoubtedly feel the same. Time will tell.
