Paying Guests

Hindi, Comedy, 2009, Color

Four fun-loving boys (Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey, Ashish Choudhury and Vatsal Seth) begin a house hunt after the first three lose their jobs and the fousome are kicked out of their present house by its cranky landlord (Asrani). In the search for new accommodation, they manage to convince their landlord Ballu (Johnny Lever) to keep them as paying guests, but Ballu has one condition - he wants only couples...So two of the boys decide to pose as wives of the other two!

Each time one sees a Hindi film that one thinks is the worst film one has ever seen, along comes another that outdoes it. Barely has one recovered from the monstrosity that was Kal Kissne Dekha, when along comes Paying Guests. One just sits gobsmacked as one watches the events unfolding on screen shocked that this film was actually made and that too by Mukta Arts.

Unfunny, stupid, senseless, crude, loud, unbearable are some of the words that come to mind in this tale of four young man who find paying guest accommodation on the condition that it would only be given to couples so two of them masqerade as wives of the other two men. Supposedly based on a popular play, the no-plot film is nothing but a series of terrible, terrible laboureda and highly forced gags that just don't come anywhere near working. One is stretched to recall if there is any scene that succeeds or even an isolated witty dialogue that one laughed at in the film. But by far, the cruelest thing the film could have done is to stage its climax in the theatre and destroy the great theatre scene of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) from which it is clearly inspired.

The cast is thakela but within it, Shreyas Talpade still comes off the best, actually maing a convincing looking sari clad woman. Johnny Lever has his odd moment, Javed Jaffrey is his usual self while Vatsal Seth and Ashish Choudhury are just not happening. And the less said about the girls the better. All of them awfully attired, Celina Jaitley takes the cake for the most unbearable and fake performance of the film, Riya Sen has never been an actress and that doesn't change with this film, Neha Dhupia has nothing to do while Sayali Bhagat makes the most ridiculous faces in the name of comedy acting. Chunkey Panday with his speech impairment is plain embarrassing. A point here, how many times can one see comedy in the name of a speech defect? Not done and in totally bad taste as well.

The technicalities are nothing to talk about and even veterans like Rakesh Ranjan (sound design) can do nothing with the material provided to them. What can one say about the music when a song that goes Jack and Jill went up the hill is the most bearable number in the film, and that too relatively?

All in all, plain awful. Avoid totally.

I think the poster is bad enough. It tells you all you need to know about the film. You could safely have reviewed the film without watching it. :-)

Off late why is a respectable / credible site like Upperstall reviewing films like 'Paying Guests' and 'Kal Kissne Dekha'?
