Padmanabhan Aiyer (Sivaji Ganesan) is a company executive for whom honour and integrity are of paramount importance leading him to be called 'Prestige' Padmanabhan Aiyer. His squabbling household consists of his wife (Padmini), two sons, a daughter and a widowed sister. So when he buys back his ancestral house he names it 'Vietnam Veedu' due to the fights. Padmanabhan suffers a heart attack when he is informed of his retirement. Suddenly he has to come to terms with his loss of identity. His children grow indifferent to him, even turning hostile and he watches as they flout all the values so close to his heart. His wife, unlike the others, stands by him through it all. When his company calls him back to serve for some more time, he has a fatal heart attack...
